W. E. B. Du Bois attacked Fisk University's president Fayette McKenzie because he had placed many restrictions upon students.
Du Bois was invited to give a speech at Fisk University to the graduating seniors. Du Bois attacked Fayette McKenzie concerning all the restrictions that students had in that university.
Du Bois decried McKenzie's practice, which consisted of taking black female students to sing in white men's clubs to get money for the university.
Du Bois and Mackenzie decided to travel around the country trying to get support to each side of the debate. However, the opinions in black and white communities were still divided.
